Evolving solutions with, not for the communities we work with.

Approaching complex and interwoven challenge of poverty and discard in a human-centered and community driven way.

Equipping end users in cities and villages to thrive and evolve sustainably.

Listening deeply to our rural communities with humility, treating people with dignity and respect.

Rooting Ideas in Community. Our on ground strategies are built from the context, cultures, knowledge, wisdom, resources, needs, and aspirations of the rural communities we work with.

Principles Driven. Our reflection, decision-making and action, in the face of complexity and uncertainty is driven by our guiding principles.

Values

To focus on the receiver's dignity instead of the donor's pride.

To recognize and value the potential of local resource and traditional wisdom of people.

To promote circular economy by ensuring maximum use of each material.

To collaborate with partner organizations to increase effectiveness and scale.

To view every entity as equal stakeholder in the process of development rather than observing hierarchical relationships.

In the race of development we all are too focused on machines i.e. the big, known issues, ignoring the needles-the most important basic needs.

At DART our focus is on the needles.. i.e the small neglected needs while the world focuses on the big machines. With a large scale civic participation, it is becoming a big people's movement for development.

Approach

Whilst India has experienced significant economic growth over the last 20 years, much of this wealth generation has been inequitable.

On one hand, we have a 'Shining India' with 101 billionaires, and a rich and middle class of 160 million. On the other, there is an India still struggling to earn a decent living, majority of which hails from 600 million rural population-either below or just above the poverty line. This India equates to 68.84% of the population and 1/10th of global humanity.

The fact of the matter is that, unless the condition of this vast majority of the population improves, there is little way for the country to realise its potential as a global economic powerhouse. It is therefore, the ability of India's villages to offer fulfilling lives and livelihoods to the people who live there that is integral to India's future as a global super-power.

When it comes to finding solutions for economic development, the entire focus shifts on livelihoods. Historically, Indian rural economy has been primarily driven by agriculture and therefore, the main emphasis of livelihood programs is largely around agriculture and allied activities. However, in the last few years, due to smaller and fragmented landholdings and youth migration, the focus has also shifted to skill development initiatives. In fact, some of the skill-based programs are being implemented with a collaborative approach which is quite a positive sign.

However, in the midst of significant initiatives by organisations to mitigate rural economic challenges, the question that still lingers is- are these steps sufficient to achieve sustainable development in communities.

DART, an NGO working for Youth empowerment believes that Skill education is necessary for a better life: the mean because it empowers an individual to earn his/her livelihood. Most of the areas in India have lack of knowledge and resources in skill development training most of young boys and girls stop education without having any skill. Their need to get skill in some profession is acute. But, in rural conditions these facilities are not available to get such skills in short time at reasonable cost. With the support of individual donors & Govt agencies. DART conducting training classes in needy areas. Team from DART conducts survey in rural communities to identify youth in need of training through evaluation of economic condition, educational background and willingness to learn.

After enrolling required number of students, DART carries out the training program at a separate Technical wing in the campus. DART has appointed qualified and experienced technical staff. For value addition, there are regular guest lecturers from experts of the subject. At the campus there is a workshop of machineries & tools to provide practical knowledge. Apart from regular teaching aids and practical in workshop, there are also arrangements to facilitate on job training to these poor youth. After completion of training in the campus, the successful candidates referred for internship in the industries. This gives them a platform to acquire skills and make even more competent. DART has tied up with some renowned industries who has a demand for skilled workforce. After training, these students get placed on wages in the respective industries easily.
